In his work "Take care of you", the Belgian psychiatrist Xavier de Longueville offers a mental survival guide in the face of stress and points the consequences of the health crisis on our body.

What are the signs of mental health in failure?

It’s a long slope. We have an extremely sensitive and always active stress system. It allows in particular to manage all the information of our environment. When this stress system is chronically activated, individuals are starting to secrete other hormones, such as cortisol, which have a physiological effect on the brain. There are three main categories of symptoms, namely physical, psychological and cognitive symptoms. When the brain is under stress, it eliminates all positive information. That said, it is thanks to this stress system that we get up in the morning.Without him, we no longer have reason to arrive on time at our meetings because we no longer perceive the potential dangers of our behavior.

What impact had the health crisis on people's psychology?

There is a two -level impact. The health crisis has caused additional stress for our stress system. This pandemic was unknown, unpredictable and completely out of control.Besides that, the confinements deprived us of a series of elements that made it possible to eliminate our stress, such as playing sports, seeing friends or participating in cultural events. The health crisis therefore added more stress and withdrew all the means to decrease it.In stress adaptation strategies, there is an important element that is looking for information in the face of an unknown element. It’s a reflex of our brain. So we spent our time looking at social networks looking for information. It made things more controllable, controllable and understandable.

How would you define hyperconnectivity?

Les conseils d'un professionnel pour moins stresser : « Il faut différencier l’urgent de l’important »

This is constantly stimulating our stress system.According to a study, we can concentrate three to four minutes without being disturbed.Children now no longer even arrive at 30 seconds as the pace of notifications is important. These notifies interest us, it is a small stimulus that stirs up our curiosity. There are also dependence phenomena linked to the gratifications that we receive by "likes" and comments on social networks. These reactions stimulate our reward system. So we're looking outside the self -esteem that we can't find inside.

What do you think is the best way to disconnect?

We should deactivate all these notifications that disturb our concentration and stimulate our stress system. When you devote yourself to a task, you have to do it entirely.Even when you watch television, it is best to put your phone. No one is multitasking. Some people have greater mental flexibility and can go more easily from one task to another, but the urgent need to be different. Is it really urgent to respond to these emails or can I give me a little time? When we adopt this logic, there is no longer really an emergency.

How do you look at the yoga and meditation practices that experienced a craze during confinements?

I am in favor of these methods which allow us to find a little serenity and a more positive self -image.I often prescribe meditation to my patients. It’s one of others to let go.In my opinion, there would be a real advantage in instilling these techniques in school and in a specialized setting.Children are in full formation of their brain. It is very important for them to reach this state of appeasement.I myself followed training in mindfulness meditation, therapy that mixes oriental meditation with psychotherapeutic techniques. It allowed me to find a sleep balance.

Does teleworking really have advantages?

It allows you to slow down the pace. It’s excellent for balance and health. On the other hand, social contact is just as important for our well-being.This is all that is informal like the little story that we tell the coffee machine. With teleworking, everything happens by phone or videoconferencing, we brief for the day and we find ourselves alone all day.We must not lose sight of the fact that we are social animals. We need human contacts that allow us to go well. You have to find a balance.I am in favor of part -time telework.
