Indonesia: Death toll from Semeru volcano eruption rises to 15
The Semeru volcano in Indonesia spewed ash again on Monday, slowing relief efforts to search for survivors after the weekend's spectacular eruption that devastated several villages and left 15 dead, according to a latest balance sheet.
The highest peak on the island of Java threw up a vast plume of ash on Saturday and caused torrents of burning mud that invaded villages located on its flanks. More than a thousand panicked residents had to be evacuated.
The eruption killed at least 15 people and injured dozens, with 27 people still missing, according to a latest report released Monday by the disaster management agency.
In aerial photos, you can see entire streets filled with piles of gray ash and mud, covering trucks or houses to the roof.
